Children's Liturgy of the Word
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
About the Ministry
What is Children's Liturgy of the Word?
Children's Liturgy of the Word is a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word in a manner so that young children come away with a better understanding of the Sunday readings and how they apply to their lives.
The gathering in church is an important part of Children’s Liturgy as it shows the rest of the congregation that children are integral to the Church and a blessing to be celebrated. It also shows that they are taking the Word of God seriously.
The priest will usually call the children to the altar and may say a few words before sending them to the Holy Family Room. He will hand the adult leader the Lectionary to hold overhead and lead the procession out of the Church.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word usually lasts between 25 to 35 minutes and ideally ends with the children returning to the Church during the Offertory hymn, which begins the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Children's Dismissal
During most 9:30 a.m. Sunday Masses at St. Bartholomew, children between the ages of six and nine are invited to celebrate Children’s Liturgy of the Word together in the Holy Family room of St. Bartholomew Hall. The children are dismissed before the First Reading and they return during the Offertory hymn. They listen to the Word of God, engage in an activity that helps them understand and reflect on what they have heard, and participate in the Prayers of the Faithful. Each child is encouraged to take home a children's bulletin to help reinforce the message they have heard. Parents are welcome to join in with their children.
“Jesus called the children to himself and said, ‘Let the children come to me and do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these’.”
—Luke 18:16

Do you love working with children?
We are always looking for volunteer catechists. No experience is necessary. The commitment is one Sunday a month, and we schedule adult leaders in teams of two or three.
Because this is a children’s ministry, you will be required to attend a training and be in compliance with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Safeguard the Children Virtus Program.
